Cloud Hosting

A long time ago someone got the bright idea that if you could connect two computers together, you could share resources and processing power to get the job done faster.

This is not networking, but a physical joining of two different computing bodies to work as a single unit. The joining forces started out having to be within the same room, but as technology advanced, these computers can be on separate hemispheres.

Having several computers linked as one is called a cloud, and to use this technology is cloud computing. To take that technology and apply it to a web host on a grand scale is called cloud hosting.

Most hosting companies already use this technology as a backbone of their production in the form of VPS. You can see variants of this technology in your computer if you use a RAID setup for your storage. Not quite the same, but it’s the spreading of information over several targets to increase reliability.

Besides being something very tech oriented, the advantages of cloud hosting are these:

1. Several servers in several independent locations

Many servers are available to run your website at any time which creates redundancy (to protect against power, service, or information loss).

If protection isn’t enough, you can have load balancing. If a single server is having a hard time keeping up with the amount of traffic is has to serve your page to, then having two servers to even out the load and share the work will be an even bigger advantage. You can set up your servers to serve your site for a particular region; such as having a computer to handle Western US States, one for the Central US States, one for Eastern US States, and one for the rest of the world.

2. Several and separate storage locations

This is comparable to your RAID drives if you have any; the information is mirrored in several locations to once again provide redundancy.

3. Virtually infinitely scalable.

Everyone likes to think of open-ended upgrades; this is what you get with cloud hosting. If you need more processing power, add another server. If you need more space, add another drive to the cloud. You have complete control over the upgradability of your site.

4. Vital data is secure.

Just like regular storage for displaying your page, any data stored in databases on these servers is also given a boost to production: the database can be replicated easy for local and global solutions.

The bad news for cloud hosting is that it is considerably more expensive than standard hosting; this is for an advanced marketer with a huge marketing infrastructure in place. Starting prices for these reliable servers can start at $400, where the regular non-cloud servers top out around $400.
